Why Vaping Will Destroy Smoking In The Long Run

Why Vaping Will Destroy Smoking In The Long Run Im sure that by now youve heard the term vaping. Its been in and out of the news like nothing else. One minute its our saviour from the evils of Big Tobacco. The next minute the New York Times is writing columns dedicated to pointing out how bad it is. Then British public health officials come out with compelling evidence that its practically harmless. Then you follow the numbers. When vaping was considered healthy, people made the switch from smoking tobacco to vaping. More people started vaping, and fewer people started smoking. It seemed as if we finally had a product that could go head-to-head with cigarettes and win. But then the backlash began by the anti-smoking lobby. They started convincing people that there was practically no health benefit from vaping. It was just as bad as smoking, they said. And as a result, people thought to themselves, why bother giving up cigarettes if the alternative is just as damaging? The numbers of people vaping leveled off and fewer people quit regular smoking. Now that British scientists have come out in support of vaping, the tables have turned once again. The kneejerk reaction of zealous public health officials seems to have backfired. Vaping only has about 5 percent of the risk of smoking which means that it is 20 times as preferable. Bottom line: if youre going to fill your lungs with gasses, make it the gas from an e-cigarette. Its unfortunate that the medical establishment doesnt understand this tradeoff. They dont seem to get the fact that life is full of risks, and that sometimes its worth trading a high risk for a low risk. In fact, this is what is going to drive people away from cigarettes and towards vaping in the long run. Right now there might be a worry that e-cigarettes arent safe, but in the future, thats going to change as more science pours in. Yes, there arent any long-term studies right now on the risks of vaping over extended periods. But thats because vaping is relatively new obviously. But even if those studies come out and reveal that vaping is just as bad as smoking, which seems unlikely, vaping will still destroy tobacco use. Heres why. Quitting Makes You Beautiful By and large, people are concerned with what they look like. We all want to look better, and were all looking for ways to make it happen. Well, whats one of the best ways to improve you appearance? Giving up regular tobacco. What tobacco does to your looks is just nasty. It ruins the appearance of your skin, aging it prematurely and making it look sallow. It also famously yellows your teeth, which is a big faux-pas in a world of people looking to imitate Joey Essex. Then, of course, there are all the other ancillary issues which will be discussed later. Suffice to say; smoking makes you look bad. Whats the worst that can happen with vaping? Well, perhaps there are some chemicals in there that maybe, under certain conditions, could produce disease. But vaping is water-based. The worst thing it contains for your skin might be a bit of vegetable oil. Theres Choice Ask any long term smoker about their experience of smoking and theyll usually report the same old things. It helps them relax. Its a habit and so on. None of these reasons ever mention the delicious flavour of what theyre puffing. Why? Because tobacco isnt exactly moreish. Its about as appealing a flavour as green tea. The only reason its been such a success is that the tobacco industry pumped it full of addictive chemicals. A good move for business, a bad move for your taste buds.                                       But heres where vaping is different. You can get practically any flavour that you want. And you can browse the web trying to find the best e-liquid brand. Different brands have different flavours and styles, just like different chocolates or coffee shops. And this opens up a whole new world of consumer interest. For the first time, what you smoke (or vape) will become a culinary interest. Its an innovation that could take off like fine dining or wine tasting. And as we know, that will generate blogs, which will create culture, which will change the way we think about smoking completely. Its Less Expensive Unless you get your cigarettes imported by submarine, youll have noticed how expensive they are. Governments love to tax cigarettes. They say its about reducing the quantity demanded. But its also a significant revenue stream for them to plough into whatever project they cook up next. This takes its toll on your bank balance and mean that you end up paying a far higher rate of tax than nonsmokers. Vaping, right now, is not subject to additional taxes. And although the politicians will no doubt clamp down on it in the future, at least it has a head start.                                                                                 Whats more, the actual product is actually cheaper to use. Most refills will last about a week, sometimes longer. And that compares favourably to what youd expect to pay for an equivalent number of traditional cigarettes. The price element here should not be underestimated. Given that the median wage in the US has remained relatively flat for the last thirty years, cheap vaping is almost a must. People have to be able to afford and incorporate new products into their lives based on their existing budgets. New technology is great, but it also needs to be affordable. Right now, thanks to the tax environment, vaping is affordable, smoking is not. You Wont Smell Bad One of the great things about vaping is that it doesnt leave a strong, bad smell on your breath or your clothes. Whats more, many people that dont smoke actually report that they like the smell of e-cigarettes. Thats not surprising when you consider the flavours.                                                                                 But whats more interesting than that is that non-smokers dont seem to care about dating vapers. They dont smell like an ashtray, so whats the downside? Vaping Is The Ultimate Anti-Smoking Technology Over the years, the public health establishment has spent billions on anti-smoking campaigns. And it would be hard to deny that these have had some effect. But, not being innovators, they didnt have the ingenuity to come up with actual solutions. Their method, as always, was greater education, which never seems to deliver on its promises. Then, about ten years ago, a lone entrepreneur came up with the idea of developing a safe cigarette. It looked like a contradiction in terms. But soon we had something that was relatively safe and was just like a cigarette. And thats the decisive point. Vaping is about as close to smoking as you can get without actually smoking. Unlike patches or gums, it mimics the act of smoking almost perfectly. Because its so close to the original, it a true substitute. It can do exactly what cigarettes do, but with a host of benefits. And this is why, ultimately, it will destroy smoking. Vaping has all of the advantages of smoking, and then some. You get the range of flavours. You get the lower costs. You get the enhanced health and sex appeal. Ever since the 1960s, the rate of smoking has been in decline. Over recent years, it looked like it was going to plateau. But thanks to the act of entrepreneurs, not satisfied with the status quo, we’ve finally got something that can help us rid the world of cigarettes for good.

Why Social Workplaces Reign Supreme

Why Social Workplaces Reign Supreme We know that people are happier at work when they are on good terms with colleagues. Gallup found  that close work friendships boost employee satisfaction by 50% and people with a best friend at work are  seven times more likely to engage fully in their work. Not convinced yet? Fostering friendships at work is a simple way of enhancing employee engagement.  Building a culture that  embraces fun, team spirit, camaraderie and a common sense of purpose creates a sense of shared  commitment. It builds increased levels of employee trust, creativity and communication, leading to staff  retention rages, good morale and healthy productivity and profits.  We need to work together, so fostering fun, friendship and support makes sense. Great organisations are  places where people look forward to going in to work. A decade of research by the Great Place to Work  Institute reveals that “great” companies consistently earn significantly higher marks for “fun”. Space to socialise All this was easier, of course, when we spent eight hours a day sharing space, meeting at the water cooler  or copier, listening to our colleagues gripe, josh and banter. In an open plan space we also had to ignore  their loud telephone conversations, raucous laughter and pungent snack foods but then nobody’s perfect.  A colleague used to say “it’s a good thing we’re all different”, usually through gritted teeth.  Making friends at work is harder now so many of us work from hot desks, home or serviced offices on  short-term or freelance contracts as we only meet up with colleagues occasionally. Times have changed Adam Grant, Professor of Management and Psychology at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, says  work is more transactional now; we go to the office to be efficient, not to form bonds and we have  plenty of productive conversations but fewer meaningful relationships.  Grant blames flexitime and virtual offices for our failure to bond with colleagues and points out that work  is more transitory, since we know we won’t be with the same organisation for long, we don’t invest in  building close relationships. This is a shame, as research shows that groups of friends outperform groups  of acquaintances in both decision making and effort tasks. Share and enjoy Personality and, in particular age, mean friendship and support at work don’t have the resonance for everyone. A recent study by LinkedIn looked at how different generations think about relationships at work: Half of all workers believe friendships with co-workers increase workplace happiness; Millennials report that friendships at work have a significant impact on boosting happiness (57%),  motivation (50%) and productivity (39%); Baby Boomers (those between ages 55-65) report work friendships had no effect on their  professional performance.  That’s not really surprising, of course, and Nicole Williams, LinkedIn career expert says “This means that  creating an office culture that resonates across generations, roles and personalities is a critical factor in  building a successful working environment.” Dr. Jessica Methot, Assistant Professor of Human Resource Management at Questrom School of Business  and Labour Relations, Rutgers University recommends organisations should focus on practices that  promote friendship among co-workers who can interact for work-related purposes such as introducing  friendly competition between staff, or implementing social intranet systems that simultaneously allow  employees to collaborate and share task information while getting to know each other on a social level. Fun  is an important component of how people  work best together. When meeting up, sharing a good time with colleagues should be front of mind as well  as productivity,  targets and business. It’s all part and parcel of how people  operate best together, doing business should be fun! Image: Shutterstock

6 Ways to Help Your Team Achieve Purpose

6 Ways to Help Your Team Achieve Purpose   It is important to define what purpose is before trying to explain how to achieve it. According to the dictionary, Purpose is the reason for which something is done or created, or for which something exists. It is also describes a person’s sense of resolve or determination. So in short you don’t need it, but having a purpose is good for your health and also helps the bottom line in business. Elite managers understand the value of purpose and how to leverage it in their people, the ‘rock star” manager knows how harness it, draw it out and capitalise on it. Employees that have purpose and are wholly engaged in their work: Are healthier and take less sick days. More likely to look after themselves and have more creative and productive lives. Are likely to be happier, have greater self-esteem and are more resilient. They are more likely to be optimistic and happy embrace new challenges. The upshot is, the more engaged and purposeful an employee feels, the more likely they are to make a positive contribution, push themselves forward and progress with the company. They are also more likely to produce work that positively impacts on the bottom line. Employees lacking purpose can negatively affect profit margins too. We have all worked with energy vampires, they are usually mean-spirited, unhappy with their own life and unlikely to be productive in their roles. They also tend to have a negative impact on those around them. A single person lacking purpose, or engagement can negatively impact on an entire teams performance and its success. How can I help my team achieve purpose? It starts with making a great hiring choice, not one made out of a sense of panic and the need to fill a vacancy. Encouraging teams to take ownership of the hiring process, and to put “talent” at the centre of everything they do. Give them the skills to become social media “orators through ?writing authoritative content to help build fan bases. (Members of your fan base are tomorrows rock stars!) Every great employer will outline realistic expectations and goals from day one. Rock star employers will align this with the personal goals of the individual. What do they want to achieve? What is their long-term goal? What can we do to help facilitate their success? Then they work together to ensure that at least part of the long-term goal is achieved. They get them to aim high and tap into that precious discretionary energy that will increase their overall productivity. The rock star manager will help their employees see the bigger picture and help them understand the “why.” The why we do what we do and why we need you, and how you can help us achieve our strategic business objectives, and at the same time achieve your own personal goals. Ensure that you recognise the individuals contribution and reward publicly. Never underestimate the power of public recognition. Recognition of a significant and meaningful contribution helps to increase self-esteem, proactivity and productivity. Reward line managers for successfully coaching and mentoring team members. The rock star managers’ bonus is not wholly based on company profit and personal success, but also on their ability to unlock and unleash the potential of their team, creating a whole company of international rock stars! Challenge your team to step out of their comfort zone, face into the fear and charge through it. The more challenged they are, the more fulfilled and engaged they will feel and it will help to build confidence and increase creativity. Helping people create a greater sense of purpose in what they do, will create a happier workforce, a more productive and profitable one, and will stop them from talking with their feet. Not only this, but as a rock star manager, it also makes your job a whole lot more interesting too! Dealing with social media envy during your job search - CareerEnlightenment.com

Dealing with social media envy during your job search Social media is great for boosting your job search and inspiring you as you plan your next career move. But it can also be responsible for generating serious envy as you scroll through your feed. So how do you deal with the jealousy and anger that social media can fuel?Your friends seem to have cooler jobs than youCareer envy is often fuelled by social media because curating a seemingly perfect lifestyle involves having a perfect job. Your friends probably won’t post about horrendous days at the office or dealing with the world’s worst customers (unless their privacy settings are firmly in place, and no employer could stumble upon their ranting status updates).Instead, you’ll see a barrage of ‘best work trip ever’ Instagram shots, tweets of conference goodie bags or PR events, and lists of reasons why #ilovemyjob. You won’t see the 3am meltdown they had before a big presentation, but don’t think it didn’t happen. To put things in perspective, look at your own social m edia feeds. How honest are you being? Those boring tasks and overly long meetings didn’t get a mention (for obvious reasons â€" big social media no-nos!). Neither did the commute from hell. Remember your own editing skills when you look at everyone else’s carefully curated updates. This is not real life, just the highlights reel, like creating a CV or a dating profile.  You’re jealous of the person who got your dream roleSocial media can be more of a curse than a blessing when it comes to knocking your self-confidence about the roles you didn’t get. These days, many companies announce their new hires in dramatic style, either with team photos or social shout-outs.You’ll probably find the new employee’s Twitter or LinkedIn profile with little effort (Instagram and Facebook tend to be more closely guarded by most professionals, as they’re less geared towards career development overall). One sneaky look can turn into a full-on social media investigation, as you scroll thr ough their updates and scrutinize their connections â€" a bit like finding your ex-boyfriend or girlfriend’s new partner and obsessing over what they’ve got that you don’t.Sometimes the social media reveal can lay your suspicions to rest, particularly if the new hire is far more qualified than you, or they’ve won more industry awards than you’ve had hot dinners. But more often, this kind of snooping only leaves you feeling bitter. Keep in touch with the company’s HR department, ask for feedback, and look out for future job postings, but stay away from the new hire’s profile, for your own good. If you’ve met t hem at an industry event, interned with them, or reached out to them for advice, you’ve already established a connection that can be formalized on LinkedIn with a personal invitation to connect. Never leave the generic LinkedIn invitation wording on there â€" make a personal case and mention where you met the influencer to make sure they remember you.Next, find influencers who are your second or third tier connections, which is a major advantage of using this social network, as you’ll naturally be directed towards them. Adding someone who shares links to others is perfectly logical, whereas it’s a bit weird if a friend-of-a-friend adds you on Facebook and you’ve never actually spoken to them.To supercharge things, think like a brand looking to use LinkedIn for SEO strategies (Search Engine Optimisation). This guide from Page One Power is aimed at SEO, but could easily apply to other users of LinkedIn. It explains how to find the people posting relevant content on the network .Nobody interacts with your postsThe key here? Sharing is caring. Show some love to others in your industry and, chances are, they’ll return the favor. If you’ve ever heard the quote ‘no man is an island’, it’s time to put it into practice, because social media is about being sociable, not ignoring everyone on your timeline. You also need to be consistent to gain traction, as many social media influencers will testify. When you see someone is new to a network (yes, there are people only just joining Twitter or Instagram now, or reactivating a dormant account), welcome them. Also, look out for secret industry Facebook groups where insiders can support each other. These are often accessed by referral or request only, so you need to be approved. Grill any industry insiders to see if there are online groups you could join to get ahead. On text-heavy networks, like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, posts with images tend to have higher engagement levels, so try integrating more im ages when you can, to increase the chances of people engaging with you. Lastly, use hashtags sparingly â€" use one or two, but never more than three hashtags per post, unless you’re Instagramming.

Resume Writing for PhDs

Resume Writing for PhDsIf you are a Ph.D. student, and you want to go ahead and write your resume to move up in the company, there are certain things that you will need to do. In fact, if you are going to apply to multiple positions, it will be necessary to submit more than one resume. What is more, it will be required that you consider some of the most important aspects of your work experience when you are writing your resume. Here are a few tips for writing a resume that will help you get you on your way to the top.If you have any previous job experience, it will be very helpful to include this as part of your resume. For this, you will need including as much of it as possible, from your first job to your last. For instance, if you were a manager, it would be helpful to mention how many managers you had before you started your new job. On the other hand, if you had a stint working for a volunteer, you can mention this as well. However, it is not essential to mention all of your pas t jobs, just enough to explain what your most recent position was. Remember, your personal and professional history should be as unique as possible. It is important to highlight your accomplishments and achievements. This should be highlighted on both the front and back of your resume. If you are applying for a management position, make sure that you highlight your success as a manager or an employee. You may also wish to note down any awards or recognitions that you have received. Remember, this is going to be the first thing that people will see, so make sure that you highlight your skills and experiences clearly.Another thing that you need to include on your resume is your educational background. When it comes to a professional position, you will need to clearly state whether you have a Ph.D. degree, or whether you have completed some other degree. Be sure to highlight how many years of experience you have, and include how long you have been a student. Finally, it is best to includ e your references. This is particularly true if you are applying for a PhD position. It is very important that you have someone who has been with you in the past. They will be able to understand what you are going through, and they will also know if you have transferred out of your current position. Be sure to list each of your references and explain why you chose them. There are certain things that you will need to remember when you are writing your resume. For instance, if you are a scientist, you will need to mention this in your resume. Even if you have completed a postdoctoral fellowship, it will still be important to state this in your resume. For instance, if you completed a postdoctoral fellowship at a university, mention this in your resume. The advice above is not intended to discourage you from submitting your resume. As mentioned earlier, the first thing that will be read when you are applying for a job is your resume. Therefore, you want to make sure that you use all of t he elements that will be most important to your potential employer. Remember, the job market is always changing, so you must update your resume as often as possible.Although it is important to outline your resume clearly, you also need to think about how you are going to format it. You can write your resume in Microsoft Word or another word processing program, but if you need to proofread it later, you can use a grammar check program to make sure that it flows correctly.
